  1. A motorway is a main road for fast motor 
  2. traffic, with two or more lanes in each 
  3. direction, and with special access points 
  4. (junctions) fed by slip roads. The first 
  5. motorway, 85km (53miles) ran from Milan to 
  6. Varese, Italy, and was completed 1924. The 
  7. first motorway in the UK, the Preston by-pass 
  8. (now part of the M6) was opened 1958, and the 
  9. first section of the M1 was opened in 1959.
