A motorway is a main road for fast motor
traffic, with two or more lanes in each
direction, and with special access points
(junctions) fed by slip roads. The first
motorway, 85km (53miles) ran from Milan to
Varese, Italy, and was completed 1924. The
first motorway in the UK, the Preston by-pass
(now part of the M6) was opened 1958, and the
first section of the M1 was opened in 1959.
